Tax Information
The American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning Credits were made available through the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 to give qualified students or parents a credit for qualified tuition/fees. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 1098-T is designated to report this information.
The University of Iowa Billing Office is responsible for 1098-T information reporting to students and the IRS. The 1098-T will be available for students to access and print in MyUI by January 31st. The 1098-T will contain information reported to the IRS such as Student Name, Address, Social Security Number, whether in a graduate program, if enrolled half time or more, the amount of qualified expenses paid in the calendar year (Box 1) and the amount of gift aid received (Box 5).
The University cannot provide tax filing advice regarding IRS Form 1098-T. If you have questions regarding eligibility for the tax credits, we suggest you contact your tax advisor.
Additional information regarding tax credits for higher education can be obtained from the Department of Education site or from IRS Publication 970 (Tax Benefits for Higher Education),

IRS Form W-9S
The University needs your Social Security Number (SSN) in order to report 1098-T information to the IRS. The University may obtain your SSN prior to starting classes (e.g. when submitting your FAFSA for Federal Student Aid). However, if you believe the University does not have your SSN on file, you can submit in one of two ways:
- MyUI: Login to MyUI and find the Provide SSN (W-9S Form) link under the Financial Aid & Billing section. After entering your information you will get a message at the top of the page that your SSN was accepted, or that your SSN was not updated because University records show a SSN already on file
- Complete Form W-9S: If unable to update your SSN in MyUI you will need to complete Form W-9S and return it to the University Billing Office.
International Tax Withholding
Per Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Publication 515, scholarships from U.S. sources, paid to a candidate for degree, and spent for the following purposes are qualified scholarships:
- Tuition and fees required for enrollment or attendance at an educational organization, and
- Fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses of instruction at the educational organization.
Qualified scholarships paid to nonresident alien (NRA) students are not reportable and not subject to tax withholding. However, the portion of a U.S. Source scholarship paid to a nonresident alien which is not for any of the purposes stated above is classified as a nonqualified scholarship, reportable on IRS Form 1042-S and subject to 14% federal income tax withholding. Examples of a nonqualified scholarship are the portion of a scholarship devoted to travel, room and board, and other living expenses.
