Outside Scholarships
Scholarship Checks
The University Billing Office is the central collection point for all outside scholarship checks awarded to students.
Checks may be mailed to our office or dropped off in person and should be accompanied by supporting documentation.
Donors may complete our Scholarship Check Submission Form and include it in the envelope with the check.
Outside scholarships are funds awarded to students by organizations not affiliated with the University of Iowa. These may include:
- Local, regional, or national businesses
- Civic and fraternal organizations
- Parents’ employers
- Religious institutions
- High school guidance offices
- Public libraries
These scholarships can help cover educational expenses and reduce reliance on other forms of financial aid.

- Funds will be applied to any outstanding educational expenses on the student’s University account, including tuition, fees, housing, meal plans, and other related costs.
- The University will not restrict the application of outside scholarship funds to specific educational expenses.
- Unless otherwise specified on the Scholarship Check Submission Form, funds will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters.
- If the student’s account is paid in full, any excess funds will be refunded to the student.
Impact on Need-Based Aid
Receiving outside scholarships may affect a student’s need-based financial aid package. If adjustments are necessary, the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) will notify the student of any changes.
